According to Narwekar, the proposed renovation of the racecourse does not have the support of the roughly 500 members of the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC). Mumbaiites own the land, therefore their votes and opinions count most in this situation.

Mumbai: In a letter to BMC commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, former BJP corporator Makarand Narwekar suggested that a referendum be held to allow the public to decide what would happen to the Mahalaxmi racecourse, where a 320-acre central park of international standards is being proposed.

According to Narwekar, the proposed renovation of the racecourse does not have the support of the roughly 500 members of the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC). He continued, "The land belongs to Mumbaiites, and their votes and voice in this matter are most important."

Given the significance of racecourse property for the city, Narwekar urged in his letter to Chahal that a high-power committee (HPC) be established that can represent the interests of all parties. He went on, "Now, the BMC needs to hold a referendum on the matter before taking any action."

"If the BMC commissioner believes that the city needs a central park. I insist that before implementing this bold idea, the BMC hold a referendum. Just because there isn't an elected body in the BMC doesn't mean that the public's input should be ignored. Narwekar declared, "Any action to move forward with the proposal is nothing but a betrayal of the citizens."

Narwekar has been against the plans to establish a central park, which would include taking over 120 acres of RWITC land and integrating it with a 175-acre garden of coastline road to form "Mumbai Central Park," because they have not held any public discussions or sought transparency on the matter.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde would be consulted on the matter if the BMC does not take action to call a referendum on the racetrack plan. Under the guise of reconstruction and the construction of a central park, we will give up such a significant and expansive parcel of property. We'll battle to the death to keep this open space intact," Narwekar continued.
