Ontario to Simplify Students' 1-Year Study Requirements for PR Eligibility
Ontario to Simplify Students' 1-Year Study Requirements for PR Eligibility
In order to expand the pool of international students
qualified to apply for the provincial nominee program (PNP), the Ontario
government is putting forth changes to the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program,
also known as the Ontario PNP.
The eligibility requirements for hundreds of international
students enrolled in one-year college graduate certificate programs across the
province are being revised by a new piece of legislation that aims to reform
OINP.
An Ontario College Graduate Certificate is awarded by more
than 900 college programs, most of which are one-year courses.
For international students, who frequently would not be able
to obtain permanent residency and would frequently consider relocating to
another province, this is welcome news.
More eligible applicants would be able to move on to the
interview stage if legislation forbade the use of Canadian work experience as a
requirement in job advertisements or application forms.
These suggested modifications could be approved by the
provincial government as early as next week, with an early 2019 implementation
date.
An analogous prohibition on employers in job postings and
application materials aims to eliminate yet another significant barrier to
employment for recent immigrants.
Additionally, the government wants to guarantee that
evaluations are completed promptly, transparently, and fairly.
In order to achieve this, the government seeks to strengthen
oversight and accountability regarding the use of third-party organizations to
assess international qualifications by regulated professions such as
geoscientists, architects, and accountants.
Studies show that helping recently arrived immigrants with
foreign training to find jobs in the fields they studied for could increase the
province's GDP by as much as $100 billion over a five-year period. Ontario
receives more immigrants than any other province.
Through the OINP, Ontario will nominate 16,500 immigrants
this year for permanent residence in a number of vital industries, including
skilled trades and healthcare.
The Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training, and Skills
Development, David Piccini, stated: "For far too long, too many new
immigrants to Canada have been directed toward overqualified, dead-end
jobs." We must make sure these individuals can find fulfilling jobs that
pay well in order to address the labour shortage. Everyone benefits when
newcomers to Ontario are given a genuine opportunity to contribute.
The move from OINP to My Ontario Account
Starting on November 12, 2023, the OINP will alter how
representatives and applicants use the e-filing platform.
Current OINP applications and expressions of interest must
be transferred from an ONe Key account to a My Ontario account starting on
November 12, 2023.
Later on, OINP will provide instructions on how to transfer
the current OINP e-filing accounts.
