Eliminating Financial Barriers to International Study:

 Eliminating Financial Barriers to

International Study:

In an effort to improve equity and accessibility of overseas education opportunities, colleges and institutions have put in place initiatives that lower or eliminate study abroad expenses.

According to research from College Pulse, over half of college students wish to travel overseas. According to a spring 2023 survey from the Institute of International Education, over 80 percent of schools expect the number of study abroad students to increase in the 2023–2024 academic year, while 14 percent believe the number of students will remain the same.

However, depending on the host nation, university, or affiliated organization, studying overseas may cost several thousand dollars every term.

Initiatives to remove financial hurdles that often prevent students from studying abroad are being funded by colleges and other partners, opening the door for students to take off and travel.

The price of applying for a passport may be the first obstacle to studying overseas. According to a press release from October, Georgia State started the Free Passport Program in 2021 to promote global involvement in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and expand the number and diversity of GSU students who own passports.

A student who is a citizen of the United States looking for a passport for the first time must fill out an online application with GSU Study Abroad in order to be eligible for a passport through the GSU program. Students must get ready and make an appointment with GSU Passport Services or the neighborhood post office to begin the process after being accepted.

In addition to completing the passport application and paying the $130 passport, execution, and photo fees, students also need to present proof of citizenship. Georgia State uses scholarship funds to compensate the student up to $165.

New financing from Delta Air Lines will pay for $8,500 in scholarships or free passports for 50 pupils. More than 1,300 people had used the program to obtain a U.S. passport as of October.

Arizona State University: Scholarship Arrangement

Arizona State University's Global Education Office (GEO) offers the Planning Scholarship, which first-generation students can apply for to help with part of the study abroad expenses. The purpose of the scholarship is to remove financial obstacles that prevent first-generation college students from engaging in high-impact activities like study abroad.

Students must finish their first two semesters at ASU, have a cumulative GPA of 2.0, be the first in their family to attend college, and show financial need in order to be eligible.

Students may use the flexible scholarship, which has a maximum value of $4,000, at any time throughout the five semesters that follow their sophomore year's spring semester. Recipients of scholarships will collaborate with GEO personnel to schedule their experiences, and they will be required to finish an additional project.

According to a news release from August, the institution will give out over $1 million in scholarships to students for global education programs in the 2023–2024 academic year, or over 250 full scholarships.

Initiative for Study Abroad Access at the University of Memphis

The Study Abroad Access Initiative was established in 2017 by the University of Memphis Center for International Education Services in collaboration with TRIO and the Benjamin L. Hooks Institute for Social Change.

Low-income students who participate in TRIO or the Hooks Institute's African-American Male Initiative (HAAMI) may be eligible to receive a $2,000 grant through the program, which will pay for round-trip airfare and a passport for study abroad students in Memphis.

Students must submit an online application and fulfill the minimal GPA standards in order to be eligible. In order to find out more about financial aid options, Pell Grant recipients are required to attend a workshop on the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship.

Recipients of scholarships consult with a study abroad adviser to plan their program's flight, apply for a passport, and prepare a presentation to be given at a TRIO or HAAMI meeting when they get back.
