Elon Musk, the wealthiest person on the planet, stated, "The issue is that those with excess power don't want to give it up."
The richest man in the world, Elon Musk, has advocated for India to be granted a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), which is the main body of the UN dealing with international affairs.
The CEO of Tesla stated in an X post on Sunday that it is "absurd" that India, the most populated nation on Earth, does not have a permanent place on the Security Council.
India, a formidable contender for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, has expressed frustration with the slow pace of development in the reformation of the body. Presently, the UN General Assembly elects five permanent members and ten non-permanent members to two-year terms on the UNSC.
Any significant resolution faces veto power from the five permanent members, who are the United States, France, China, Russia, and the United Kingdom.
The wealthiest millionaire in the world stated, "The issue is that those with excess power don't want to give it up."
The UN secretary-general, António Guterres, recently pushed for changes to UN structures. "Institutions should depict the reality of today, not the world of eight decades ago. "The September Summit of the Future presents a chance to deliberate on global governance reforms and establish confidence," he wrote on X, posing the question of why Africa is still devoid of permanent membership.
Venture entrepreneur Michael Eisenberg retorted, "And what about India? Even better would be to abolish the UN and replace it with a new organization run by true leaders. Musk answered this post in response.
Musk continued by saying that Africa as a whole need to have a permanent seat.
The Summit of the Future, "Summit of the Future: Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow," has been slated by the UN General Assembly for September 22–23.
One of the main objectives of the summit, as stated in the summit papers, is to establish the Pact for the Future, an outcome document that is action-oriented.
A UN Special Envoy for Future Generations may also be appointed, and talks on additional institutional reforms and initiatives may also be pursued.
Musk went on to say that all of Africa ought to have a permanent seat.
"Summit of the Future: Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow," the theme of this year's UN General Assembly meeting, is set for September 22–23.
Adopting the Pact for the Future, an action-oriented outcome document, is one of the summit's main objectives, as stated in the summit papers.
