The majority of plagiarism cases on UK university applications are being filed by Indians:

During the past two years, the number of students detected copying personal statements from undergraduate applications to British universities has increased, with India having the biggest number of these cases among international candidates.

765 of the 7,300 applications in 2023 that were reported for plagiarism were submitted by applicants from India, according to a spokesman for the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). There were 3,559 flagged for plagiarism in 2021.

According to UCAS, India is the nation of origin where personal statement plagiarism is most common outside of the UK, followed by Nigeria, Romania, and China.

The University of Greenwich, Birmingham City University, and Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) had the highest number of applicants that had plagiarism alerts.

"Personal is precisely what the personal statement is. Candidates must speak up for themselves in their own words.Every personal statement is examined by UCAS' fraud and verification department for similarities, and when it finds one, it flags the information. UCAS Chief Executive (interim) Sander Kristel stated, "We have made it very clear that generating all or a large part of your personal statement from an AI tool like ChatGPT and presenting it as your own words could be considered cheating."

Speaking with us, a recent MMU undergraduate student who is Indian stated: "Some Indians share personal statements. For example, after being accepted into a course, an Indian student in India may share their statement with other Indian applicants for the same course, who may then modify it slightly and use it as a means of admission. Nobody I know who attempted this was turned down. Since they are unsure of how to write them, I believe they do it out of a lack of confidence. For a price, certain agents in India assist with personal statements.

There are other companies in India and the United Kingdom where you may pay to have your projects written for you."

"There are tons of organizations in India and China called education consultants who help students write their own personal statements," an Indian postgraduate student told TOC.

TOC has observed a slew of social media advertisements from organizations offering to write research papers, essays, dissertations, and even "maths, physics, and chemistry" for a charge, with WhatsApp numbers in the UK and India.

There is a murky ecology, which is why I want the migration advisory committee, which is assessing the graduate route, to investigate the agreements institutions have with agents, as well as the entire business of how UK education is promoted abroad."
