Eligibility for the New Canada Post-Graduation Work Permit in 2024

Eligibility for the New Canada Post-Graduation Work Permit in 2024:

Beginning on February 15, 2024, the Canada Post Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWPP) will undergo some significant new modifications that you should be aware of.

The value of master's degree holders in Canada's labor market is being acknowledged by the government.

In order to improve the PGWPP even further for these graduates, below are the revisions for 2024.

When these adjustments take effect, it will be a significant turning point for foreign students hoping to work and study in Canada.

PGWPP 2024:
Modifications to the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program
These new rules state that students who have finished a master's degree, regardless of whether it lasted two years or less, will still be qualified for a three-year PGWP as of February 15, 2024.

The government hopes to improve the chances of gaining permanent residency status in Canada by increasing the PGWP term for master's graduates, which will enable more seamless transfers into the workforce.
This audacious decision demonstrates Canada's dedication to luring and keeping top talent from throughout the world, acknowledging the invaluable skills and knowledge that holders of master's degrees bring to the table.

Aspiring overseas students now have an extended window of opportunity to explore career options and obtain priceless professional experience in Canada thanks to the creation of the post-graduate work visa program.

PGWP Qualifications for College Programs in Public-Private Partnerships
The IRCC has placed restrictions on PGWPs for certain public-private partnership college programs in response to worries about the standard of instruction and student support at these establishments.
As of September 1, 2024, students enrolled in curriculum licensing agreement programs will no longer be eligible for PGWPs.

The PGWP is still available to current international students enrolled in these programs, but post-graduation work permits are not available to new enrollment.

The purpose of this regulation is to increase the likelihood that students will succeed in their jobs by providing them with a quality education.

Final Thoughts on PGWPP Upgrades 2024
There are now many more opportunities for overseas students who wish to study and work in Canada thanks to improvements made to the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program.

These adjustments ensure that the program operates well, promote positive growth in Canada, and facilitate job placement for graduates.

Maintaining awareness and adhering to the updated qualifying requirements are essential if you want to take full advantage of Canadian prospects for both career and academic achievement.

Modifications to Spouses' Eligibility for Open Work Permits
Updates are also being made on who is eligible for a work visa in Canada if they are the spouse, partner, or parent of an international student studying there.

Soon, the only people eligible for a work permit will be the partners of graduate or professional degree candidates.

This implies that the partner of the student may still obtain a work permit even if they are enrolled in a graduate or postgraduate school.

However, the partner of the student will only be qualified for a work permit once if they are enrolled in a lower-level program, such as a bachelor's or college diploma.

This update to the Open Work Permit Eligibility is intended to ensure that the student's educational background corresponds with the employment prospects available to their partner.

It ultimately comes down to being equitable and giving each person the best opportunity possible based on their educational objectives.

Cap and Attestation Letter from the Province
There is now a cap on the number of new international students that can come to Canada to study, which is a major modification to the regulations.

The annual quota on new international students admitted to Canada will be 360,000 permitted study permits in 2024—a 35% decrease from 2023.

With effect from January 22, 2024, the majority of newly admitted overseas students to colleges and universities must submit their applications with a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) from the province or territory in which they plan to study.
This document, known as a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL), certifies that the province or territory has granted the student permission to pursue their education in Canada.

This adjustment has been made to ensure that immigration procedures are followed and that Canada's population is growing in a sustainable manner.

Prospective students who wish to expedite their study permit application procedure should acquaint themselves with the requirements for eligibility in order to receive a PAL.

For whom is the Canada Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) applicable?
When they fulfilled all other program requirements, graduates of qualified Canadian post-secondary schools who completed a study program lasting at least eight months were eligible for the PGWPP.

Public-private partnership college programs, however, will no longer be eligible for PGWP if they begin their courses on or after September 1, 2024, due to a recent change of the PGWPP in Canada.

For what duration is the PGWP valid?
The length of the finished study program determines how long the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is valid for.

What updates have been made to the PGWPP?
With effect from February 15, 2024, the PGWPP has undergone modifications that increase the work permit period for master's degree program graduates to three years, regardless of the length of their program.

Exist any limitations on eligibility for the PGWPP?
Yes, depending on the level of the student's program, limits may apply to some applicants for study permits, graduates of public-private partnership colleges, and the eligibility of spouses for work permits.
