India will account for the greatest percentage of foreign students studying in the US this year as well: US Consulate

Christopher Hodges, the US Consulate General in Chennai, noted that the most common academic subjects in South India were computer science, artificial intelligence, and business administration.

Indian students are expected to surpass Chinese students in US higher education institutions in the next years, according to the US Consulate General Chennai, which is holding a number of free US higher education fairs this month in Bengaluru, Manipal, Mangalauru, Kochi, and Coimbatore. In the academic year 2022–2023, 1,057,188 foreign students were enrolled in US higher education institutions and participating in Optional Practical Training (OPT), according to representatives of the US Consulate.

Officials from the US Consulate reported that 268,923 of the 1 million international students were from India, and they expected that figure to become even higher in the upcoming academic year. The expansion of education fairs "beyond state capitals" into other locations, according to officials, will present a fantastic opportunity for more gifted students to choose the United States as their study destination. An official from the embassy stated, "We are confident that the largest number of students in the coming academic years will be from India, even though we saw a 35% increase in Chinese students in 2022."

According to data provided by the embassy, an astounding 948,000 foreign students arrived in the US between 2021 and 2022 to pursue their studies. More than 581,000 student visas were granted by the Department of State in FY 2022—the most since FY 2016.

Christopher Hodges, the US Consulate General in Chennai, noted that the most common academic subjects in South India were computer science, artificial intelligence, and business administration. Data released by the consulate also showed that, in 2022–2023, 55% of foreign students choose STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subjects due to the opportunity to return to the US for 36 months following the course. Then came the social sciences (8%), business and management (15%), engineering (19%), math and computer science (23%), and math and computer science (19%).

Hodges also discussed the role that American and Indian businesses and universities can play in advancing new developments and investment in cutting edge fields like commercial space, artificial intelligence, quantum, and green hydrogen, as well as the impact that the US-India initiative on critical and emerging technologies, or iCET, will have on these areas. "The U.S. Consulate General in Chennai is bringing together American universities and South Indian business and research partners to leverage the tremendous talent in both of our nations to boost innovation and drive growth that will elevate our relationship to new heights," he stated. These locations are home to some of the best Indian students anywhere, as well as innovative institutions that will propel us forward. And we're honored to be involved in bringing American university partners that highlight the power and vibrancy of American higher education to south India.

The Department of Higher Education is open to permitting Indian students to pursue international collaborations and collaborative education with American colleges in higher education, according to Dr. MC Sudhakar, who attended the education fair in Bengaluru on Monday. Our goal is to make skill-based education our first focus. As a result, some of our students are unable to afford to study in the US; thus, classes should be held jointly by the government universities of Karnataka and the US. For this, we shall offer our complete assistance," Sudhakar remarked.

The US Department of Commerce, International Trade Administration, and US Commercial Service in India are in charge of organizing the education fairs, which are set to take place until February 20. Students interested in master's or doctorate programs in the US are welcome to attend the event. During the event, attendees will have the chance to speak with representatives from eighteen U.S. higher education institutions, EducationUSA consultants, and visa officers/diplomats from the U.S. Consulate General Chennai.

The delegation's visit started on February 12 and 13, 2024, in Bengaluru. From February 14 to 15, 2024, it will go to Mangalore and Manipal. From February 16 to 17, 2024, it will meet students in Kochi. Finally, from February 19 to 20, 2024, it will end in Coimbatore. Senior representatives from Arizona State University, University of Texas-San Antonio, George Washington University, and University of Arkansas are part of the group.
