New Minimum Wage in Canada and Five Provinces

New Minimum Wage in Canada and Five Provinces:

The new minimum wage in Canada and five Canadian provinces/territories (Yukon, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador) is effective today, April 1, 2024.

To keep up with inflation, the federal national minimum wage in Canada has been raised to $17.30 per hour, up from $16.65 previously.

All federally regulated commercial sectors in Canada, including banking, postal and courier services, and interprovincial air, rail, road, and ocean transportation, are required to pay the federal minimum wage.

However, critics continue to oppose the new minimum wage, claiming that it falls short of true living wages in various parts of Canada.

The minimum wage in Canada does not match the living wage.
Official minimum wages in Canada and its provinces continue to be lower than the practical living earnings in the country's main cities.

The living wage is defined as the amount that individuals must earn to pay the genuine costs of living in their neighborhood, and it is based on community-specific data.

The living wages in major Canadian cities are mentioned below.
